Let Joy (and Sandra’s Stamps) Be Your Compass:

December 1, 2020 Sandra Evertson
Jenn Pipe Joy 4.jpg

Back in the day (circa 2000--), I was a HUGE scrapbooker who cataloged every memory, both big and small. I am a very tactile and visual person and the act of combining heartfelt words with my photographs, pretty patterns, and textures lit me up from inside. It’s a way of storytelling and memory keeping that really vibes with who I am at the core.

My style of art has morphed since then and the way I document our memories has morphed alongside of it. I also have access to a much more robust portfolio of art supplies—which means that a lot of what I create these days is off the page and many times doesn’t even involve a single word or a sheet of paper. As I reflect on it, that evolution has been both a blessing and a curse.

Sometimes, when I’m looking for inspiration to hit, or when I want to get those creative juices flowing, I have an overwhelming desire to get back to my roots. Which is exactly what I did here. I had a few specific goals in mind when I set out to create my projects for this month’s MUSE blog post:

• Work small—each assemblage should be under 5x7.

• Keep it simple and mainly 2-dimensional (paper and embellishments only).

• Use lots of layers.

• Create additional backgrounds with Sandra’s wide array of stamps!

• Make it fun and playful.

Jenn Pipe Joy 1.jpg

I started by pulling out my R+A and ArtFoamies stamps, marveling in the collection I have amassed in a relatively short period of time. I also gathered up some patterned papers and scraps, fun embellishments, and some washi tape. Have you ever tried to create art while simultaneously and consciously limiting yourself to certain materials? It’s a great way to challenge yourself and get the pistons in the creative centers of your brain firing on all cylinders, so give it a try if you haven’t already.

Jenn Pipe Joy 2.jpg

Then I made some backgrounds, primarily using Sandra’s Air, Marrakesh, and Tenango Oscura ArtFoamie. I also used Cupola, Halo, Driftwood Crown, and the Portal series. Then, I unleashed my Inner Child and let her out to play! I tore papers, gathered up some whimsical embellishments, and layered with wild abandon. The result was these beautiful (and fun) multi-dimensional assemblages. What a feast for the eyes!

Jenn Pipe Joy 3.jpg

Are you curious about what you might do with such creations when they are completed? Well, anything you want! But, you can gift them, add them to books or journals, turn them into cards, swap them, pin them to a mood or vision board, or have them be the focal point in a larger art journal page. They can also be the centerpiece on a canvas where you add more 3-dimensional elements like the R+A craft blanks. The possibilities are endless! I chose to adhere them to an oversized folio I have been working in—they act as benchmarks in my artistic journey and reminders that some things come full circle.

Keep creating!

P.S. Here is where I highlighted Sandra’s stamps in each piece. I used Marrakesh and Cupola in “Let Joy Be Your Compass.” In my “Enjoy the Journey” ocean pieces, I used Air, Halo, and the tiniest little scrap of Marrakesh. In “Be Brave,” I used a Tenango Oscura background, Air, and Esoteric from the Portal series. And, in “Forever in My Heart” I used Tenango Oscura, Driftwood Crown, and some of the smaller foamies hearts from one of Sandra’s retired pieces.

Christmas Time Is Here, An Ornament Project by Kent Mullens

December 23, 2019 Sandra Evertson

Christmas is one of my favorite times of years.  It is a time of being with family and friends.   There also seems to be a sense of hopefulness around this time of the year.

Christmas is important to me because of my faith.  When Sandra asked me to be a guest on the Muse I  had the perfect idea of what I  wanted to make.    I love to make and create ornaments to give to my family especially my wife and daughters.  I had seen a couple of new releases that I knew I wanted to utilize to make a Christmas ornament.  This Chiristmas ornament will not be given away. It will be something  that I will save for myself.  It will be a reminder to me about the true meaning of Christmas.

I chose one of the Cathedral windows to use for my piece.   These windows remind me that the past always holds the keys to the future.  The windows can be a shining light illuminating the future by looking at the past.  I used water colors in shimmering platinum and and grey. On the roof I added a touch of green to help create a patina.  I then took granite pencil over all the raised areas so that the texture would be exposed.  I used swarovski crystals and pearls  to give the window a sense of opulence

I also chose the crown from the Mini Santos collection.  The crown is a symbol of royalty and power. I colored it with watercolors in gold, yellow and pewter so to give it depth.  I then embleshied it with Swarovski chrystals and pearls.

I then used a star stamp from Tim Holtz set Christmas Time 2 CMS 389.  I embossed it on Yupo paper with shimmering gold embossing powder.  I cut it to fit the window pane and adhered it with glue.

I then took the smallest doll in the tribe series and wrapped it in Tim Holtz Mummy cloth and glued it so that it looked like swaddling cloth.

I attached the crown to the bottom of the window upside down and then glued the baby to the bottom of the crown.  I then attached a gold ribbon to the back of the ornament so that it will hang from the tree.

I love the symbolism of this piece.  As a follower of Christ I am constantly reminded that Jesus came to turn power upside down and is a reminder to us that love, hope, compassion are the way in which people will know who are true followers of Jesus Christ.  I hope you have the merriest of Christmas and a hope filled New Year.

RELICS & ARTIFACTS® International Talent Search: You Have Moved Us

June 5, 2017 David Evertson

We recently held an International Talent Search within our Relics & Artifacts Tribe on Facebook and let me tell you.  They did not disappoint!  Our Tribe answered the call with so much creativity, imagination, intuition, brilliance, and such a range of styles that we felt compelled to share each and every entry with all of you.

The contest is to have one of our Tribe member's project professionally photographed and then featured alongside the Ambassador projects in a full-size advertisement campaign within the illustrious pages of "Where Women Create" magazine.

We received well over sixty submissions, each one unique and profound.  Each piece an expression of the creator's heart and soul.  Each submission a risk being taken and vulnerability being shared.

To say we are overwhelmed by the level of participation is a gross understatement.  We were moved.  We were blown away.  We were emotional.

What was even more compelling than the sheer volume of entries was the genuine support each artist and craftsman shared with their peers.  The comments and cheers for their fellow creatives captured the essence of what the Relics & Artifacts® ethos, no movement, is all about.

We have always tried to make sure that this mantra of shared inspiration, creativity, and artistic enlightenment transfers not only through the pieces themselves, but the community these pieces have helped to create.

We have our work cut out for us in choosing a winner and as of today, we are still trying to figure out who that artist will be.

But what an amazing challenge to have before us!  While the decision is by far the toughest we've had to make to date, it is a glorious feeling to see all of these pieces showcased together.

Every style, aesthetic, and skill level represented in vivid color, side by side with seasoned veterans is a thing of beauty and something uniquely special about our Tribe.

You are one of the biggest and greatest gifts this Relics & Artifacts journey has blessed us with.  We treasure not only your works, but you as well.  Your creativity, heart, soul, and love is reflected on a universal scale.

You have moved us.  And for that, we love you and we thank you.

RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Mid-Century Modern Challenge **WINNERS**

March 27, 2017 David Evertson

We love to host challenges that really push our Tribe members to step outside of their comfort zones and try new things.  This challenge was no exception and was completely different than any other theme we've had in the past.  We decided to go retro mod and our Tribe members did not disappoint!  We had several amazing entries but the following two really blew our minds.

Our first place winner, Julie Lee!  Her piece was not only mid-century modern inspired, but she added her own creative little twist with the wing and the imagery she is so widely known for.  She kept with the theme and yet, she infused her own signature style into her piece to come up with this wonderful composition.  Congratulations, Julie!

Our second place winner really captivated us with her mix of mid-century geometrics and a warm, luscious grunge inspired color palette.  Jackie PN, congratulations to you!  Jackie's use of the eyes and the face were an inspiring touch and very unique direction in which to take this theme.

We always enjoy our members' submissions to our challenges.  Our next contest will be announced **THIS FRIDAY** and we promise.  You absolutely do NOT want to miss this whopper.  Join our Relics & Artifacts® Tribe on Facebook and be sure to keep an eye on the Muse for the big announcement this Friday.  It's sure to get you fired up and excited for what's ahead.

#RAShadesofRed Challenge Winners!

February 27, 2017 David Evertson

We celebrated Valentine's in true Relics & Artifacts® fashion with our #RAShadesofRed challenge.  We had some many wonderful entries.  Choosing our winners was a monumental task and after much deliberation, here are the results!

Congratulations to Iva Wilcox, our **FIRST PLACE** winner with her "Momento Mori".  The color pop of red mixed with the luscious antiquing and exquisite design are simply marvelous.  The tributary nature of this piece melted our hearts.

Our **SECOND PLACE** winner is Linda Carter!  Her framed cherubs were simply beautiful and they just look so delicate and precious.

Congratulations to both of our winners.  All of our Tribe members had superb entries and we truly loved looking at each and every one of them.  Interested in joining the fun and having a chance to win major prizes?  Join us on Facebook in our Relics & Artifacts® Tribe.  Our next challenge will be announced soon and it's sure to be a (hint, hint) blast from the past!

"Paint People" RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Guest Feature: Karyn Bunting

December 15, 2016 David Evertson

Art has always played a happy part in my life. I love looking at things that people view as having only one purpose and seeing another life for that piece.  In 2012, I moved to Tampa to take care of my now 94 year old mother. When I moved into her condo I painted everything in sight. Walls were pink and black, while the furniture showed years of love shared with her puppies and many, many cups of coffee.  I went through gallons of paint and lots of paintbrushes. It seemed a shame to just cast aside brushes that had done so much to beautify our home.

Hello!  Hello!  We have a BRAND NEW challenge for all of you Relics & Artifacts® fanatics out there!  Your next mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to stretch your creative muscles, broaden those artistic horizons, and get down and dirty with resin!

Since we now carry Susan Lenart-Kazmer's renowned Ice Resin®, what better way to welcome this brand new product into our creative folds than showing us what magic you can work.  Pair together this jeweler's grade resin with any Relics & Artifacts® resin piece and upload it to The Tribe on Facebook.  Please be sure to label your photo with #RAExplorethePossibilites in order for it to be considered for the prize.

Prize?  Wait what?!  Yes!  There are prizes for first and second place and these prizes are way more than just bragging rights, though those are equally awesome too.  This round of prizes will include product from both RELICS & ARTIFACTS® and Ranger!  Totally awesome, I know.

One more little thing to keep in mind.  Please be mindful of copyright etiquette.  Replications of any part of Relics & Artifacts® line or packaging are not only unallowable, it's also extremely uncool.  Please be careful to observe and adhere to copyright standards and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask any of the Ambassadors or Relics & Artifacts® Powers That Be.

Good luck and don't forget that hashtag, #RAExplorethePossibilities, when uploading your project!
