Limited Edition Spider

RELICS & ARTIFACTS® brings you a unique piece just in time to create Halloween Art.

Cast from a large antique jeweled Victorian brooch our spider is filled with symbolism.

Symbolism in art has been common since the first cave dweller dipped his hand in ochre and created an imprint on the wall.

Artists use this "hidden language" everyday and during the height of the Victorian era it was perfected.

Hearts conveyed love and devotion, snakes symbolized eternity and wisdom, crescent moons represented spirituality whilst the stars were symbols of guidance.

Swallows mate for life their image represents wanting your loved one to return home safely, lady bugs were viewed as "granters of wishes."

And as for spiders, they are meant to be a recognition of creativity and hard work. Giving someone a spider design is a gesture to wish the receiver wealth and prosperity.

It is also believed that seeing a spider drop down from its web is a certain sign that you will be blessed with gifts and good luck from heaven.

Native Americans know the spider as the "Thinking Woman" a powerful being who created the universe and world as we know it according to legend.

And because its such a wonderful German story.... Once there was a poor widow who wanted everything perfect for Christmas. She couldn't buy gifts so she decided to make her home look as nice as possible, she worked hard cleaning her home. The spiders who resided there became frantic, realizing they would be destroyed if discovered. They decided to hide in the attic until Christmas was over. The last thing the woman did before bed was bring in the Christmas tree. The spiders in the attic were cold and miserable, they could smell the sweet scent of the tree and came down to investigate. They were ecstatic to see this wonderful tree, got carried away spending hours crawling and playing on the tree. Early the next morning the Christ child arrived to bless the home, he was stunned to see the tree completely covered in cobwebs. He knew the woman would not be happy, with love he gently touched the spiders webs. Something magical happened, the web started to sparkle and shine in glorious silver. Waking up on Christmas day the woman saw a spectacular sight the tree was covered in silver threads, tears of joy and gratitude rolled down her cheeks. And thus the custom of tinsel!

Perfect for the maker who wants something different.
