"Live Out Loud" with RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Chrissy Colón

March 29, 2017 David Evertson

When you hear "Relics & Artifacts", what pops into your mind?  Victorian?  Roman?  Antique?  Classical?  I'm sure many of these descriptors are a common thread when one takes a look at the blank canvas a resin craft blank is.  I'm sure people think of timeless jewelry pieces worthy of becoming family heirlooms.  I often think along these lines as well.  That is, until I got a wild hair and decided to do something LOUD.

Remember this work in progress photo?  Bright happy colors, finger painting, and a vague direction is all I had.  I just knew that i wanted to do something bold, bright, modern.  I wanted to make a piece of jewelry that reflected my personality.

After looking at this piece, another thought occurred to me.  I am so inspired by my fellow Ambassadors.  There is a little bit of them inside this piece as well because they have become a very integral part of my creative personality.

I sometimes focus so hard on what I need to do, that I often forget to do what I want to do.  I sometimes forget to live and to live out loud.  I hope this inspired piece reminds me to do just that.

RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Mid-Century Modern Challenge **WINNERS**

March 27, 2017 David Evertson

We love to host challenges that really push our Tribe members to step outside of their comfort zones and try new things.  This challenge was no exception and was completely different than any other theme we've had in the past.  We decided to go retro mod and our Tribe members did not disappoint!  We had several amazing entries but the following two really blew our minds.

Our first place winner, Julie Lee!  Her piece was not only mid-century modern inspired, but she added her own creative little twist with the wing and the imagery she is so widely known for.  She kept with the theme and yet, she infused her own signature style into her piece to come up with this wonderful composition.  Congratulations, Julie!

Our second place winner really captivated us with her mix of mid-century geometrics and a warm, luscious grunge inspired color palette.  Jackie PN, congratulations to you!  Jackie's use of the eyes and the face were an inspiring touch and very unique direction in which to take this theme.

We always enjoy our members' submissions to our challenges.  Our next contest will be announced **THIS FRIDAY** and we promise.  You absolutely do NOT want to miss this whopper.  Join our Relics & Artifacts® Tribe on Facebook and be sure to keep an eye on the Muse for the big announcement this Friday.  It's sure to get you fired up and excited for what's ahead.

"Faux Mercury Glass Easter Eggs" with RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Milagros Rivera

March 24, 2017 Guest User

With less than a month until Easter Sunday, I'm totally in the spirit! I love decorating my home through the seasons and I also love visiting the stores and seeing what's out there.  I'm a huge fan of mercury glass and because it's spring, the colored mercury glass is right on point.  What started as a home decor item quickly turned into childhood memories of opening foiled chocolate bunnies!

I thought to myself, "How cool it would look if I actually made them into pendants!"  I went with the sweet colors of the season and instead of using glass spray I went with Deco Foil in silver to create the faux silver mirror effect that looks so pretty on mercury glass.

Using Apoxie Sculpt, I sculpted two sweet bunnies for inside my Imperial Eggs.  They were painted with Ancient Gold, that sort of looks like milk chocolate!  I think I need to string more beads 'cause I'm in looove!!!!

For my green I used two different types of foil, silver and turquoise. I made you a very small tutorial on Snapguide so you can follow along with what I did.  It may inspire you to create fun elements as well!

"Wabi Sabi" with RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Sherry Matthews

March 22, 2017 David Evertson

According to Wikipedia, Wabi Sabi is a concept in traditional Japanese aesthetics constituting a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete".  The wabi sabi aesthetic embraces characteristics of asymmetry, simplicity, and an appreciation of natural characteristics and processes. With this bracelet, I try to encompass those same attributes.

"From the Tribe" with Guest RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Naomi Walsh Montana

March 17, 2017 David Evertson

The Relics & Artifacts® family loves the work we see in our Facebook Tribe and we love to invite our Tribe members to be guest Ambassadors every month on the Muse.  This month, we asked Naomi Walsh Montana to share her work with us and her piece is nothing short of astounding.  Let's grab a cup of coffee and get to know Naomi a bit!

"Hi, everyone , it’s so exciting to be your guest Ambassador this month as I have so admired all
those before myself.  I live in Southern California with my husband, son and too many pets to mention by name.  I have always been a maker for many years.  I dreamed that I would be a writer or film maker and have taken classes in fields.  I have written tomes upon tomes of poetry and stories and I still write at a maddening pace.  I am not sure when I fell so deeply in love with the visual arts from sewing to sculpting and all the spaces in between.  I have never really taken formal classes although I have availed myself to some really in-depth online courses from some very talented artists.   I highly recommend wild, unbridled experimentation.  I can tell you that I am like an excited child when working to create a new piece and the moment I first laid eyes on Relics & Artifacts®, I knew it would be a long term love affair.

The piece I have created for you is called “Time Passages”.  I had not thought to create a working clock.  It was the last thought of many pondered.  I knew I wanted to use as many faces as I could and I knew I wanted to share my textured wood techniques.

I might have agonized over it a bit and I remember walking into our kitchen where my husband was sitting and putting a group of Relics & Artifacts® faces in front of him and venting my frustration at not yet being totally in love with an idea for this project . He said, “You know what would be cool?  A clock!"  I am not one to question whom the muse speaks through but I knew it was going to be a clock.

I had a second of doubt because I did not come up with it but I would create it.  My process is nearly always the same.  I basically go into my studio and spin around, taking in all the pieces and materials.  I grab things and put them on the table and those things inspire me to grab other things and as I am grabbing my mind is beginning to put it all together.

I hope you will be inspired to create this piece in your own way as there are so many variations from color to the different craft blanks you choose for your clock face.  Please feel free to bring your own personal talents to the task.  For me each piece of art is a new story to tell."

You can connect with Naomi on Facebook at Curious Creations and on her website, NaomiMontanaWalsh.com.

"Fancy Badge Holders" with RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Heather Thompson

March 15, 2017 David Evertson

A friend at work recently was admiring my badge holder I had made with a Relics & Artifacts® piece. She said she wouldn’t mind one of those and asked if I could make her one. I am always up for sharing my art, so I went for it.

I made a variety of holders, not knowing which one she would like. I used Relics from different sets, wanting a variety for her to choose from and then I just sat and played around one day.

Out of all of them I made, I can’t pick a favorite.  They are all unique and with the extra badge holders I made, I am able to switch things up a bit when the mood strikes me.

Not to mention, there has been an piqued interest when co-workers see them.  They ask, “Where did you get that?” As a result, I have had some personal requests. I think after wearing the same navy blue scrubs for as long as some of us have, adding a little variety in the work attire is welcoming.  How fun it is to get to wear the Relics & Artifacts® to work!

"Hello Spring!" with RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Monica Downing

March 10, 2017 David Evertson

Spring, my favorite season. I look forward to it every year. This year though, I must say, we have had a very mild winter, but I am still looking just as excited for Spring to arrive!

I live in the Ozark Mountains in northwest Arkansas and when Spring rolls in, it does not mess around.  It goes from brown to explosions of bright green and wild flowers in every color of the rainbow in such a short time, and it stays that way most of the year. It’s like mother nature on crack around here!  I live in a very wooded area so all of the color is such an amazing contrast against the browns of the trees.

The wood bark and sticks came from my front yard. We had a big line of thunderstorms come through last week and when I was walking to my car to go to work the morning after, I saw these amazing pieces of bark with moss and natural fungus and the idea for this project just evolved from there.  This piece is my way of sharing that beauty with everyone.

The flowers you see in this project are actually the toppers from some of the Relics & Artifacts Chandelier Pendants. I KNOW!!! SO COOL RIGHT???

I really hope seeing this piece brings some Springtime beauty your way and hopefully it will inspire you to create something using items from nature that is all around you. It is a great way to bring the outdoors in.

Oh! And stay tuned because I will be using the actual Chandelier pieces in an upcoming project and I can’t wait to show you!

"Brotherly Love" with RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Milagros Rivera

March 6, 2017 Guest User

Recently, Chrissy was asking about our Muse.  Well, mine just sparks unannounced, while driving, sleeping or just by catching a glimpse of something as plain as a piece of chipboard or substrate. I had three different materials in front of me, perfectly sized for ATCs  and I wanted to experiment on mediums while doing a cohesive unit of three.  I've worked on chipboard, wood and acrylic from That's Crafty! out of the United Kingdom.

My inspiration came from the Figureheads set. I wanted to create the bond between siblings. Brothers, sisters, it's all so strong and compelling, how one can stand for the other.
I've also used Cat Kerr's stamp "Brave Heart", because as we grow, one of them can help the other to be brave in unexpected situations...

...one can be the one showing the way and help you follow your heart.

I thought my triptych needed a mother so I added her to the mix, as there is no greater love in the world than the one our mother's have for us!

I've prepared a Snapguide for you on how to work the different surfaces.  I used Figureheads from several packages and a pair of wings.

Relics & Artifacts® "Figureheads"
Relics & Artifacts® "Ancient Soul"

"Mirror, Mirror on the Wall" with RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Heather Thompson

March 3, 2017 David Evertson

Having young children at home and the fact that they STILL think Momma is fun and "the best Momma in the world," my art is highly influenced by them.  It tends to reflect on what we are actually doing around the house or in the gardens or what we seem to be watching at that given time. Also seeing that my daughter, Olivia, and I share an art room together she gives me her honest, heart warming opinion on EVERYTHING.

I mean, when she doesn't like something, she will usually give you a better way of doing it in her eyes. So when it came to the "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall" piece, we were talking about how we wanted it to look and we had the movie up on the screen. Olivia was pointing out details in the walls and torches and things evolved from there until it was time to make the torches.

So with Apoxie Sculpt® in hand, (she gets to mix it up for me and then play with the left overs because I can never measure the perfect amount) I struggled, and then struggled some more, and then mom duties where calling and I had to make supper.  She asked if she could help. I thought, "Why not? Let's see what the girl's got."

I was happy to see I wasn't the only one that struggled. She would manipulate and twist and turn and with much delight, the torches were done, and not by me! As proud as Olivia was of her handiwork, I said, "Well we better put them where they belong."

So to give credit where credit is due, Olivia, the little scutlper that she is, did in fact, make the beautiful torches. With some expert "Olivia guidance" of color choices, this "Best Momma in the World" finished the paint details that made the whole project seamlessly come together.

A collaboration of the minds, our rendition of "Mirror Mirror on the Wall" was completed and Olivia is one proud artist.

"Of Dreams and Wings" with RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Sherry Matthews

February 28, 2017 David Evertson

Born of the caterpillar in the chrysalis, butterflies have long been a symbol of rebirth and regeneration in many cultures. But did you know they are also the courier of dreams?

The Blackfeet held a belief that dreams are brought to us in our sleep by a butterfly.  It was also custom for a Blackfoot woman to embroider the sign of a butterfly on a small piece of buckskin and tie it in her baby's hair when it's time for the little one to sleep.

She would then sing a lullaby asking the winged one to fly about and deliver sweet dreams. The soft flutter of the butterfly's wings was believed to be hypnotic and watching the gentle flight would induce slumber.

This piece was created in honor of the Blackfoot legend... a little dream imagery tucked into wings , ready to be whisked away to the land of nod.

May your dreams give you wings.

"From the Tribe" with RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Guest Ambassador DeeDee Catron

February 14, 2017 David Evertson

This month's "From the Tribe" RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Guest Ambassador is a woman of incomparable talent.  She's been in the industry for quite some time and has worked with a multitude of people to include Donna Downy.  It is our pleasure to introduce DeeDee Catron as February's Guest Ambassador.  Grab a coffee, a comfy seat, and let's let DeeDee show us what she's all about!

"I am a Mixed Media Artist | Instructor | Designer sorting through the ever expansive mixed media world in an effort to conquer ALL.THE.THINGS. I can never settle on one medium or one technique and I truly love to throw them all together. I live in Las Vegas and I teach classes both locally and abroad. I also offer occasional paid eCourses and tons of free mixed media demonstration via my YouTube channel."

DeeDee's work of art is absolutely mind blowing in its composition and construction.  We'll let her share the story.

Hello Relics & Artifacts Tribe! I'm super excited to be here today sharing a project I worked up specifically for Sandra and the amazing team. I've been a long time fan of the girls who work the Muse and Toil was a labor of love inspired by each and every one of them.

Toil started out as a political statement and evolved into a much more personal expression. It's about keeping the balance between respect and courage.

Between wants and needs,

Between light and dark,

Between life and death.

It's about the inner struggle and which wolf we'll feed today.

Toil encompasses a lot of symbolism and there are a lot of struggles on the piece. The contrast in texture between the smooth resin and the harsh grungy masking tape is so appealing. The full figured Renaissance style face versus the feeble old skeleton makes my heart race. It's always fun for me to start a project, watch it morph, finish it and then talk about it.  When Mr. Catron saw the finished piece he blurted out, "It looks like a mausoleum!" and I was so happy about that! It wasn't something I INTENDED but what a cool final effect, right?

What do YOU see when you look at Toil? What emotions are stirred, if any? I really look forward to conversing with you about the art. ♥

DeeDee's art invokes thought and is every bit as evocative as it is provocative.  She's so graciously put together a Snapguide tutorial for you on how to create a piece like this one.  Beautiful, powerful, thoughtful and so full of soul, we thank you for sharing your creativity with us.  For more about you can connect with her on her website, Facebook, Instagram (@deedeecatron), and YouTube.

It's All In The Details

February 10, 2017 Sandra Evertson

I get enjoyment from many different aspects of Creating.

Sometimes I have a plan and do quick sketches to get my ideas down on paper and while I have dozens of sketchbooks filled with project drawings and ideas, it would take me years to actually make all the pieces I've designed and want to create.

I love collecting, gathering and sorting through my antique materials.

Taking time to try out different arrangements until I find the perfect piece and placement, you know it's the piece that looks as though it were made to go in that spot!

The golden seed beads and bouillon trims you see here came off of a 1920's Flapper dress and all of the set stones are actually "paste" stones from the 1700's. Paste is a term they used for a certain kind of highly refractive lead glass that was hand cut, faceted and then polished to resemble real gem stones.

The large center stone is also early paste. These stones are getting harder to find all the time.

In order to get just the right look on the flames I've layered several different tones of yellow from mustard to butter, sun to sunset, all topped with little highlights of metallic gold.

When I'm hunting for antique pieces it's the details that make all the difference for me. The thing I go crazy for on these stones is the setting, look closely, each setting has a little dot of round metal that holds the stone securely, isn't it beautiful?! And just so unique.

When the last bit of embellishment has been applied another aspect of being a maker is ready to happen. Photographing the finished piece is a much fun for me as making it was. It's an expedition, traveling around the object, camera in hand, peering through the lens just waiting for the right angle to reveal itself.

And lastly the satisfaction I get when actually wearing a piece I made from beginning to end. The sense of pride and accomplishment means so much to me, its especially gratifying in times of unrest in the world.

I never take for granted the act of creation. Makers are the journey takers, the adventures, the wanders and the experimenters. Thats who we are, we explore, we observe, we absorb, we interpret, we express and we contribute.

"Sweet, A Foil Exploration" with RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Milagros C Rivera

February 8, 2017 Guest User

2016 was a year of many adventures!  One of them was the development of a stencil line based on my art journal entries with The Crafter's Workshop.  At the recent Creativation show in Phoenix, they were finally revealed and of course I needed to see how well they paired with Relics & Artifacts®!

I thought Flora was the perfect pairing and after adding it in her hair, I decided to add some strands of Bohemian Jewels.  They added the perfect flow to her hair! When you see her up close she glows with the foil! To be able to show part of her shine, I had to put her on an angle as foil tends to catch the light.  I prepared for you a Snapguide tutorial so you can see the process of altering the Relics and the use of the brand new Transfer Gel by Deco Foil.

Since our challenge for you this month is #RA50ShadesofRed, I paired her with reds and pinks and I can't wait for you to see the paint I used on the Flora!

"Blessed Mother Mary" with Featured Guest Kittania Miller

February 2, 2017 David Evertson

Ever since I was a young girl, I can remember getting ready for church with Grandma and how she just loved this brooch of the Blessed Mary. It was rich in blues and golds and just made me feel something. It made my Grandma look regal and rich in my opinion. It was one of her most prized pieces.

"Memories of the Ocean" with RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Monica Downing

January 31, 2017 David Evertson

Living in Arkansas now, I rarely get to the coast. I grew up inland from San Francisco and my grandmother lived in the city so we would go visit her on a very regular basis.  She would take us down to Fisherman’s Wharf for sourdough and clam chowder. We would have fish 'n' chips and watch the seals on the lower piers. The sounds and smells of the pacific were always just so fresh and wonderful and very much a part of my childhood.
